Studying in Dublin, Ireland
ABOUT DUBLIN & IRELAND: Ireland boasts one of the highest standards of living in Europe, and Dublin consistently ranks as one of the most popular study-abroad destinations in the world. While in Dublin, Baylor Global Scholars will have expert guides and resources to navigate the safe, mid-sized city and immerse themselves into an authentic Irish way of life.
GETTING AROUND TOWN: By far the cheapest way to do so is by buying a Leap card to bus around Dublin. The city’s bus and light rail systems are very reliable and very frequent and are much cheaper than taxis, which can be a tad on the expensive side. You’ll easily get from the UCD campus to the city centre in twenty minutes, and the bus terminal at UCD is the second biggest in Ireland, so you’ll never be waiting very long for a bus to arrive. Dublin’s lovely parks are also a great way to have fun for free. A picnic in the wonderful Phoenix Park (ten minutes from the city centre) or a coffee in Stephen’s Green (in the heart of the city) are wonderful ways to watch the people of Dublin go about their business.
SAFETY IN DUBLIN: Dublin is statistically speaking a very safe city. Global Finance magazine ranks Ireland the 14th safest country in the world. To put that in context, the U.S. is ranked 65th. According to the World Population Review, Dublin is the 10th safest, while the U.S. ranks 128th in this index. Violent crime rates are lower in Dublin than in most U.S. cities. However, Dublin is still a major European capital city, and Baylor staff work closely with students to make sure they are aware of and prepared for the realities of commuting in a large metropolitan city.
WHERE YOU'LL TAKE CLASSES: University College Dublin is the best university for international students in Ireland. 9,500 students from more than 152 countries study at UCD. UCD is one of the top-ranked universities in Ireland - and is also ranked in the top 1% of higher education institutes worldwide. It is one of the best universities in the world (2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject). You will receive a world-class education at UCD. Students love the UCD campus, a huge, spacious campus with lakes, woodland walks and wildlife close to Dubin's city centre. You can take a virtual campus tour and explore the campus for yourself in 3D today!
WHO WILL SUPPORT YOU: Your Baylor Faculty Director and graduate assistant will be on-site the entire semester. At UCD, they offer a range of supports for students, such as a network of Student Advisers, the Student Health and Counselling Service, the Chaplaincy, and disability services offered via the Access and Lifelong Learning Centre. The UCD Global Experience Team provides information, guidance and support on the international elements of the student experience. This could include support with complex immigration queries, cross-cultural advice, assistance during a crisis, dealing with culture shock or settling into life in Ireland. We encourage you to engage with other international students through the UCD Facebook group and Instagram account.
